Before immersing into the stories that are the theme of this journal, I want just to say that I will be away for the next two months or so and expect only to return to significant computer time in September. Occasionally, when I have the opportunity, I shall pop into dA to check out your work but time will be too limited to reply to s s es or comments that may accumulate in the time between now and then. Please forgive me this - I hope to be able to catch up later in the year.

Stories

Everyone has stories to tell. These are told verbally or written down. But for many, these are expressed through art. Here are a few stories, told as a series of images. While there will be many hundreds of such series out there on dA, these are from some of the people that I watch. I have tried to select only those where there is a specific and identifiable thread that runs through time. Obviously, many people out there focus on particular things (e.g., landscapes, portraits, etc etc) but the threads here transcend these: there are stories being told. Please enjoy: there's much brilliance here.

I woke up this morning, glanced at dA to find this lot waiting as new deviations by some of the people i'm watching ... quel matin!



To make it only slightly better, yesterday I received 15 or so developed films so i'll be scanning some of those as well this morning ... for posting when i get a chance

This photo was taken in the very remote Chalbi desert in northern Kenya during a survey for Grevy's zebras that I (and a team of volunteers) carried out in 2000. This is a territorial male in the early morning when he was returning from drinking at the brackish spring that is his water supply. We estimated that there were just over 2,500 Grevy's zebras in Kenya at that time; the estimate has since fallen to below 2,000 animals - representing just under a 90% decline in this species over the past forty years ...

One result of the DD was a huge swelling in the number of messages ... if this is the response to my DD then, heck, I don't know how those outstanding, prominent people on dA can keep up (and then do some creative work)! Anyway, I'm trying to work my way through the backlog. I am very grateful for all the s, s, comments and es that have come my way in the past month. Forgive me, please, if I don't manage to thank you all. I do appreciate your support and, at least, try to visit your work.

First, I'd like to say a Big Thank You to all that have visited my page, looked at some of my photographs and 'ed, 'ed, commented and featured them. While I might not have been able to reply to every , or comment, I do appreciate your support enormously.

I have finally begun to catch up with things ever since going away. One of the pleasures of coming back was seeing the deviations that had been posted. In this journal, I'd like to feature two photographers whose work I am thoroughly enjoying at the moment, post a number of rather random but great features and, finally, answer to the tag ...

8 random facts about me:

1. Between 1993 and 1998, I spent just about four years living in wildernesses in a tent but didn't take as many photos as I would have liked during that period
2. My favorite thing about dA is finding new, astonishing art in - mostly friends' - journals and being able to tell the artists how wonderful their work is!

4. Of the four years spent in a tent, just under three were spent in northern Kenya wondering why there are so few Grevy's zebras - see [link] and [link] - left in the world and how to keep alive those that remain ...
5. I remain profoundly cynical about the ability (or even the will) of politicians to lead us out of the chaos in which we find ourselves and the world about us.
6. I am currently exhilarated by the feeling of 'flying' through the three-dimensional submarine world while scuba diving
7. While I'm probably a fairly serious person, laughter, spontaneity and irreverence are often the best medicine
